I can’t stop the giddy joy rising in my chest and smile. A normal life. I get to go back to a normal life. Or as normal as I get. “Four. If they have the last courses I need to graduate during the summer term, I’ll be done by September.” Then I have to worry about getting a job, what to do with the rest of my life, and my lack of work history. Somehow I don’t think putting assassin on my resume will score me any interviews.

His hand drifts farther, brushing over my neck and along the faint scar left by Josef, a member of the family who tried to kill me on Isaiah’s orders. The doubts stir from their slumber at Nick’s constant touch tonight. His attention should make me happy. I am happy. I step back and tell those doubts to shut up.

He studies me a minute more, the light on the little porch buzzing when another fly gets trapped. It’s so damn loud, that buzzing, filling the silence. “Fine,” he says. “I get a copy of your schedule?”

The worry line between his brows makes my heart sputter just as badly as when he calls me “love,” only in an entirely different way. “Yes. A copy of the schedule, and anything else you think I need to stay safe. Except a babysitter. I’ve still got Josef’s knife.” Somewhere. It’s probably buried in a bag at Nick’s.

“I’m getting you your own. Something that fits your hand better.” He picks up my hand, holding it palm out, and uses his thumb to trace the creases.

My excitement dims a smidge. Carrying my own weapon is permanent, one that speaks of Nick’s faith that I can handle myself and the scrapes I get into. It’s also part of the life I’m trying to leave behind, if only Isaiah would pop up from whatever rock he’s hiding under.

And I wonder, not for the first time, if staying with Nick means I can’t shed that identity. If it’ll dog my steps like an unfriendly ghost.

“Why are you here, Josh?” I couldn't hold back my curiosity any longer.

“What do you mean?” 

He seemed completely caught off guard by my direct question, and I had to remind myself that he couldn’t see inside my head. I really didn’t know what I wanted to hear, but Edward’s words kept coming back to me. Maybe Josh only wanted to sleep with me, nothing else—although it seemed like a lot of trouble for only a night of pleasure.

“Do you really only care about getting into my pants?” I asked, bordering somewhere between a pleading glance and a glare. 

Josh seemed to relax a bit before he answered me. “You know I do. But not in the way that moron phrased it. I don’t want you thinking about it like that.”

“You have no idea what I’m thinking,” I quipped. 

“I don’t,” Josh said quietly. “I wish I had a clue.” Then he stepped closer to me and tilted his head. “And obviously you don’t know how I feel about you, either.”

“Then explain it to me.” I didn’t try to back away from him this time.

This time he looked at me with different eyes. I didn’t see myself broken in them anymore.

1. Describe yourself in three words.  Happy. Friendly. Upbeat.

2. How did you start writing Romance? I read romance for years, ever since I discovered Judith McNaught. I have been writing all my life, newspaper and magazine articles, newsletter for my job at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City years ago, and I always intended to write a book. In 2010 I went to a panel at the Oklahoma State Library that was featuring local romance authors. I sat there and listened to them and said ‘I can do this.’  I quit my job and began writing. Sold my first book a year later and never looked back.

3. What’s your favorite love scene from a movie?

When Rhett Butler scoops up Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind and says “By God there will only be two people I my bed tonight,” then races up the stairs to their bedroom. I still get goosebumps thinking about that. 

4. What’s your wildest fantasy?

Time travel. As a history major in college, I would love to travel to different time periods to see how the people actually lived, dressed, worked, and ate. We tend to see people from the past like a still life painting because we are looking at drawings or pictures. But they breathed, lived, ate, became ill, fell in love, lost loved ones. 

5. If you were to lose one of your senses, which would you rather lose and why?

Probably hearing. Especially with all the noise pollution and trash we’re subjected to on a daily basis. I could live without that.

6. Is there anything else you want your reader to know?  

Yes. I love my readers, and I love when I hear from them. One of my favorite emails was from a reader who said one of my series got her through chemotherapy. Nothing beats that.

Callie lives in Oklahoma with several rescue dogs, two adult children, a daughter-in-law, twin grandsons and her top cheerleader husband (although thankfully not all in the same home!). Living in the Midwest provides plenty of opportunities for Callie do pursue her interests: researching history, meeting readers, spending time with her adorable two year old twin grandsons, and discovering new adventures.
